TAKING POSSESSION OF YOUR SPACE
If you are reading this probably you are moving to a new space or remodeling.
Which is both an exciting and perturbing situation.
On the one hand making new rooms particularly your own, is challenging, intense and rewarding.
But inevitably time consuming.
On the other hand if you choose to give your interior designer a free hand you’ll worry about
living in somebody’s else idea of what’s best for you.
But most top designers do know what’s best, specially if yours is a spacious interior.
Many of our clients have found what they consider a harmonious middle path to the dilemma.
In this approach the designer gets a fixed budget and a free hand for the larger, more public areas
while the clients direct their input to the more intimate areas of your new space.
Why? Because its in these more personal spaces, where family gathers and shares life,
your style and taste will be most appreciated and influential. |

| Some customers, like the Von Soosten's of Georgia and Florida, personalized their dining area by having the Family Crest carved into the center door of their buffet console we custom crafted for their Atlanta home.
|
In practice evidencing your style requires using the favorite pieces you already have and/or
finding additional sources for choice pieces.
In the furniture business “choice pieces” means one of two things:
antiques, exquisite furnishings at least 100 years old or art furniture,
contemporary pieces of bold design and artisan craftsmanship.
Choice art furnishings and antiques are jewels with the ability to capture the eye,
provide a new center of attention and enhance the scene.
A wizardry which allows you to confidently make your favorite, personal rooms memorable.

AN INVESTMENT
Because today’s top antiques are the best of yesteryear art furnishings,
today’s best furniture art have a shot at becoming choice antiques in the future.
A Wall Street Journal report on the furniture market titled “Sitting on $15,000" published 21 January 2005 describes how the works of known contemporary art furniture markers have become valuable collector items.
Interestingly the data in the well researched article demonstrates the average price of all the pieces in the study increased by more one hundred (100%) over the previous decade. |
 |
| XXI century criteria for beauty: organic, warm, vital. |
|
|
QUALITY
For a contemporary art furniture piece to have a chance at becoming a choice antique the first requirement is its longevity. Which, in turn, depends on the methods, techniques and materials utilized for producing the pieces.
At Furniture-Art-Furniture we are focused in having our work recognized in the world's best category.
Making the highest quality furniture is labor intensive. Most of our pieces embody dozens of man hours. Some less, some more. Each of the pieces is priced to reflect the cost of the time, materials and overhead invested in their creation. |
| In all our wood based pieces we only use:
- the bench work system, one craftsman is
responsible for the piece, from start to finish
- fine Guatemalan fiddle, cedar, iron and mahogany
woods from Government Certified (INAB) renewable sources
which are kiln dried to six (6) degrees of
humidity, the International Export Standard
- mortise-and-tenon joints to secure the structural unions in a piece
- dowels to attach table tops to their supporting frame
- hidden dowels to anchor 45 degree miter joints from all angles
- water based stains which are naturally absorbed and never discolor
- hand held carving tools and
- hand rubbing for all our multi-layered finishes
(sanding, tinting, multiple sealings and sandings and coating).
The second requirement is beauty. |

| Natural beauty, enlarged and made useful. |

AESTHETHIC VISION
The drive to create beauty is an inborn aspiration of many.
Yet the calling flowers but in a few and usually only after years of practice in the chosen media.
But when it does bloom, the practitioner can look back and understand the “rules” which sustained his or her aesthetic vision.
In our genre, furniture-art-furnishings, the rules are balancing the proportions, originality, function and presence of a design in such a way the finished work in undoubtedly beautiful.
This site features our favorite pieces. |

MAKING OF THE PIECES
Every piece we sell begins its life as a prototype, a process which requires significant revisions in each step of its execution. To do that effectively the furniture maker must develop the ability to “see” the finished piece and the path for skillfully getting there.
Diana Font, our Aesthetic Vision Partner, follows the rules she learned over the years to
reach “Artist Proof / Original ”
prototype thru a hands-on, “sculpturing” approach at her forge and wood artisan shop in Guatemala.
Every person involved in the creation of our art furniture (the maker, the carpenters, the forgers, the carvers, the upholsterers, the finishers, the apprentices) consider themselves artists. So your response to the emotion provoked by their work is a most welcome, important reward. |

| The Matador is the principal actor in a bullfight. He puts his life on the line every time he is called to slay the wounded, furious beast. He is considered the quintessence of the very brave man. Our ottoman,. shown from two sides, captures both the lean, tight physique and spirit of the legendary slayer and the "suit of lights" he wears to carry out his very dangerous missions. |

| BRICK AND MORTAR
Since the early 1990's we have made art furniture and functional art furnishings
of artisan craftsman quality in Antigua, Guatemala.
During the days of Spain’s empire the Crown ruled their New World domains
thru three viceroyalties located in: Mexico City, Lima, Peru
and Antigua, Guatemala. Royal Colonial lifestyle fed all the arts.
Among them fine carpentry and metal forging
which survived through generations of family artisans.
To keep these artisan skills from disappearing the shop trains apprentices in wood and metal working. The shop, which has several of the very best artisans in this World Heritage City, has given full time employment to several graduates of its two year apprentice program.
Visitors to Guatemala usually tour Antigua,
one of the most popular attractions in this beautiful
country. If you are visiting Guatemala we would love for you to visit the artisan studio. So please call (Tel. 7-831-0595, Spanish only) and ask for directions on getting there. When you visit you will be shown step by step, how they make our pieces.
Collectors of Furniture-Art-Furniture pieces directly support the shop's apprentice program. |
