In a pedestal with one bright spotlight to make its metal spines shine the sculpture becomes a major art piece. Given a round glass top next and placed next to your favorite chair she becomes an exquisite side table.
Design Notes:
This design process began when we envisioned a globalization table for your private office be it at home or downtown.
The difficult mechanics of concept – how to hold a ball with stylized carvings of the planet’s land masses in the correct nclination without a gross support system – made us put it on the back burner. Until we rediscovered cactuses which, in spite of their deep ridges and valleys, appear perfectly round to the eye and offer functional flat tops and botoms.
Construction Notes:
The solid central mass of the Cactus sculpture is assembled from aromatic cedar,
lathe turned into a ball, on which the ridges to be craved are pencil marked.
The chunky oversized conical spines are hand beaten solid metal with a grooved spike
which is
screwed to artistically scattered indentations on the surface of cactus.
